On my Ubuntu I’m facing this JVM Bug which suddenly freezes the keyboard of IDEA. Now I’m trying Anils suggestion. Therefore I need to install a Java 7 snapshot:
- download self-extracting binary file of java 7 snapshot
- run
chmod +x jdk-7-ea-bin-b48-linux-i586-19_feb_2009.binto make it executable - run
./jdk-7-ea-bin-b48-linux-i586-19_feb_2009.binto extract the archive - run
sudo mv ./jdk1.7.0 /usr/lib/jvmto move it to the other JVMs - run
update-alternatives --config javato check how many JVMs you already installed - run
sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0/jre/bin/java 3
I got 2 installations, so I need to specify a 3 - run
sudo update-alternatives --config javato chance your java version. - run
java -versionto validate everything is fine
To tell IDEA 8.1 to run with Java 7 you need to add -Didea.no.jdk.check=true in idea.vmoptions.
Keep your fingers crossed for me that this will fix that problem;)

Thanks, these instructions came in handy.
I wanted JRE 1.7 on my portable Ubuntu as it has some good performance improvements. Useful for Minecraft 🙂
When I do this and try to run minecraft, it errors with “Exception in thread “Minecraft main thread” java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /home/keegan/.minecraft/bin/natives/liblwjgl.so: libjawt.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory”
but libjawt.so is in the jdk1.7/lib/i386 folder. Anyone know of any way to get java to recognize it?
Well, I got around it by adding this to my launcher:
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7/lib/i386
Thanks for the tip Keegan!
thanx for the post.. really helped me a lot..
keep up the good work

Thank you very much, this works exactly the same for JDK 6 self-extract installation.
The people with jibjawt.so errors, there is a much simpler way to fix it. Go to lwjgl.org and download the latest version. Replace all the files in /.minecraft/bin, including the natives folder with the files included in there. That is a complete fix, and updating lwjgl has performance improvements of its own. 😀
Broken link so cant install. This is so stupid. Why do people expect me to use lunix if i cant even get sun java without doing all this command line stuff? none of the tuturials work
